ICE CREAM ON THE PROM by Kathy Goddard

There was nothing Audrey enjoyed more than an outing to the prom. They sat watching the waves, licking their ice creams. The air was scented with donuts, candy floss and salty seaweed. Audrey wiped ice cream from her chin and rubbed sticky fingers on her skirt.

‘Behave or I’ll take you home.’

Audrey pouted.

‘Want the donkeys.’

‘No donkeys.’

‘Want to paddle.’

‘Not today.’

Her frustration building, Audrey threw her cornet, hitting a man’s designer T-shirt. She giggled when ice cream covered the logo. Her companion rushed over to apologise.

‘Behave!’

Audrey had behaved for decades, as daughter, wife, mother, grandmother. She’d had enough. Having reached the age of ninety, she had determined that this was her time to be naughty.

Kathy is a short story writer and poet and has been fortunate to have some work selected to be published in anthologies. She is currently querying her first novel.
