Cranked Anvil was founded in 2012
by writer and actor Paul Dunn.
We began as a theatre production company, producing performances in and around the North-East of England, focussing mostly on New Writing.

LOCAL PRESS REVIEW FOR OUR REHEARSED READING NIGHT
As time went on, more and more of our efforts became focussed on our Rehearsed Reading Nights, which gave writers a chance to have new writing/works in progress/finished pieces a professional performance in front of a live audience, and then receive immediate, constructive feedback.
We produced seven Rehearsed Reading Nights in total, and the events grew in popularity and produced many successful full-scale productions for numerous writers and companies. It was this which has matured Cranked Anvil into what it is now; focussing on writing competitions, small print anthology runs, and providing a resource and platform for writers.
Our vision and mission
Our focus is on engaging with new writers, to shout about and champion their writing, and to work alongside other creatives to tell and share great stories.
By providing various diverse, quality resources, our mission is to be a ‘one-stop-shop’ in providing writers with inspiration and practical advice on their writing, and readers with quality writing to enjoy.
Our work
Since 2019 we have run our very successful short story and flash fiction competitions, and these remain the bedrock of our work. In addition, we have recently added our ‘Fiction 1-2-3’ platform, where writers can submit microfiction for publication on our site, completely free. We also operate a literary agency department, representing authors and playwrights. And there’s plenty more to come in the future – watch this space!
Cranked Anvil still, as it always did, operates as a small-scale, non-profit-making organisation.
