Photos showed the “fabulous second-hand satsuma couch” was huge and horribly orange. Zoë bought it straight away.

The delivery men turned it on one side, backed up and tried again. ‘Don’t worry, love, we’ll take the legs off.’ They unscrewed its ponderous paws and pushed it through the doorway, as far as it would go. Zoë found the gilded feet on the step, along with plastic bags bulging with cushions that looked like giant pumpkins.

She was sitting on the couch when Jake came home.

‘What the–’

‘A farewell present for you.’ She squeezed past him with a suitcase.

‘And the door?’

‘You threatened to change the locks. Now you needn’t bother.’

‘Wait, you can’t leave me like this.’

‘Watch me.’
