The Life and Death of a Peripatetic Bottle of Wine
by Linda Fawke
Celebration? No – just Friday evening, start of the weekend. Time for a bottle of wine.
‘What have we got?’
‘I’ll find something in the cellar.’
The ‘cellar’ was a wine rack in the cupboard under the stairs.
‘Something posh?’
‘Ha! I wish!’
He produced a white wine, with an attractive label, produce of California.
‘Don’t recognise that.’
‘Nor me. We don’t buy Californian wine.’
‘Maybe someone brought it to our Christmas party.’
He poured two glasses.
‘Smells odd.’ I took a sip. ‘Yuk! It’s off!’
‘You know what this is? It’s the wandering wine bottle. The one no-one knows, no-one wants, no-one drinks and everyone passes on. We’ll just put it to rest down the drain!’
‘…and have a G & T.’
Bio: I write fiction and non-fiction, have self-published two novels and (recently) a non-fiction, light-hearted book about living as a retiree in the French Alps, ‘Going Downhill – A Retiree’s Guide to Ski-Bumming’. Currently, I love writing short and very short fiction.

Bani-shed
by Kathy Goddard
Ernest ran his hand over the oak panels, sanded carefully to bring out their true beauty. He admired the snug fit of the dovetail joints.
At first he’d been offended when Vera banished him to the shed, having a never-ending stream of visitors popping in for coffee. Even here he could hear her constant chatter, but at least she was muted. He felt comfortable here in his safe haven, sawing, sanding, varnishing.
He had in turn banished Vera from the shed so she was unaware of his project.
Finally finished, he lay down in the coffin, and allowed himself a smile, imagining the day it would be used for its true purpose, and Vera’s voice would be left behind forever.
Kathy is a short story writer and poet and has been fortunate to have some work selected to be published in anthologies. She is currently querying her first novel.
