One of our former prize winners, Richard Hooton, is to have his debut novel The Margaret Code published on 10 April by Sphere, an imprint of Little Brown.
The voice-led whodunnit follows eighty-nine-year-old Margaret whose failing memory holds the key to the murder investigation taking place on her street.
It will also be published in America by Union Square and Co, and in Germany by DTV.
Richard won first prize in our flash fiction competition in August 2021 with Washing Day and was placed second in February 2024 with The Universal Soup. He has also been shortlisted and longlisted several times in our short story and flash fiction competitions.
Richard said: “Thank you for Cranked Anvil’s support on my writing journey. Since having successes in your competitions, I was able to get an agent and a book deal. Winning and being placed in your competitions were a huge boost and helped validate, and instil confidence in, my writing.”

Richard’s book is available to pre-order from Amazon or any bookshop.
You can find him on Facebook, Instagram, X, and Bluesky as @RJHooton.
Congratulations, Richard, from all of us at Cranked Anvil!
